Double Tree Hotel, Charlottesville
As part of the 2014 Charlottesville Dogwood Festival, the 3rd Annual Dogwood Benefit Breakfast will be held on Friday April 25, 2014 at the Doubletree Hotel. The "BE SUPERHERO STRONG" Benefit Breakfast will honor 6 year old, Leland Crickenberger. The proceeds from the silent auction will go to Leland and his family.
Here is a brief description on Lelands journey. On Oct. 16, 2012, at a routine visit to his doctor, he ended up being given the diagnosis of Neurogenic Bladder Syndrome and Kidney Reflux. Leland underwent 3 different surgery procedures to track the progress of the syndrome to the bladder and kidneys. He was then diagnosed with Neurogenic Bowel Syndrome as well as an overactive bladder. His doctor began several medications to slow the progress but the Syndromes were working faster than the medications could work. This left the doctor no choice but to place a GI port to deliver the medicine faster to his intestines. After countless doctor appointments, scheduled trips to the operating room, the doctor could not slow the progress down. Leland's parents were given the options of taking no more medical intervention or take a chance for traveling several states away to try a procedure that is not guaranteed to work. Leland and his parents leaned heavily on their faith as they knew God would see them through. In December of 2013, Leland and his mother traveled to Cincinnati, Ohio for a new journey. Leland endured the trip with smiles and not a single fear. He was excited that he could possibly get better. Leland has endured countless needle sticks, surgeries, medical appointments, and hospital stays. With his future needing countless more surgeries, and the possibility of lifelong dialysis, Leland lives each day to the fullest.
Leland inspires everyone who knows him with his courageous smile, willingness, and his "Superhero" strength. His motto is, "Be Strong, Be Superhero Strong"!
